Stonyhurst College review
Founded in 1539, Stonyhurst College may not boast flashy public exam results or engage in extensive promotion in Hong Kong, but it still attracts numerous students due to two main reasons. First, its campus is a Grade I listed historic building, and the castle-like design allows students to study in a traditional English environment. Second, the school has produced influential figures in society, such as former CEO of The New York Times, Mark Thompson, author of "Sherlock Holmes," Arthur Conan Doyle, and renowned health authority leading Hong Kong's pandemic efforts, Professor Gabriel Leung.
Stonyhurst College Introduction
Emphasis on Students' Learning Attitude
According to the ISI survey, Stonyhurst College ranks in the top 5% of schools in the UK for student performance and value-added progress, meaning the school places great importance on discovering students' learning characteristics and tailoring support to help them improve their academic achievements. The survey results align well with the school's motto, "Quant je puis—as much as I can." Stonyhurst College aims to encourage students to excel in various fields and hopes that each student, regardless of their initial academic ranking, can graduate without regrets, continuing to pursue higher education at their desired university. The school also offers the International Baccalaureate (IB) programme, providing students with the freedom to choose courses that suit their interests and strengths. In 2020, one Stonyhurst student even achieved the distinction of being an IB "dux" with a score of 44 points.
Expansive Campus with Historic Buildings
Founded in 1539, the school originally started in France before relocating to Lancashire, England. Stonyhurst College boasts a 2,500-acre campus, equivalent to the size of 17 Ocean Parks. Of course, the school buildings occupy only a small portion of the land, but it signifies the school's potential for future expansion of campus facilities. The main teaching building of the school is a Grade I-listed historic building. Additionally, the school has historical equipment available for student use, including the oldest working observatory in the UK and the oldest museum in any English-speaking country, which houses many valuable exhibits.
Stonyhurst's Connection with Wah Yan
As one of the most renowned alumni of Stonyhurst College, Professor Gabriel Leung's contributions to the school go beyond just being a "celebrity." Before studying abroad in the UK, Professor Leung attended Wah Yan College in Hong Kong. Stonyhurst College is regarded as a "guarantee of confidence" by many Wah Yan students. When Hong Kong students consider studying in the UK, their first choice is often Stonyhurst, the "mother school" of their seniors. As a result, a "Wah Yan Network" is formed at Stonyhurst, ensuring the high quality of Hong Kong students at the school.
