Recalling the "initiation" into this profession was purely a "coincidence. I remember the first time I discussed studying in the UK with my parents; it was about seven years ago. At that time, I hadn't entered this field yet, so I lacked the information and experience provided by schools. The discussion with that parent about GCSE subject choices was entirely based on my own experiences studying in the UK. I recall that the whole process took only about 15 minutes.
Originally, I thought my answers were just the ordinary views of someone who had studied abroad, not any profound wisdom. But to my surprise, while that parent kept saying "thank you," tears welled up in their eyes, and they even took a few steps back to bow to me. In the end, they said, "I've really never heard this advice before; thank you! Hearing this grateful remark, I never expected my humble advice to be so important to this family. At that moment, I thought that maybe this profession needed a voice like mine—someone who could use their perspective to bring clarity to every confused student.
Now, after nearly seven years as an educational consultant, what makes me proudest isn't the number of students I've helped, but that I'm no different today from seven years ago. I'm still offering advice to juniors and underclassmen without any reservations. Close to 70% of our centre's students are referrals from past students, and that's the statistic I'm most proud of. Maintaining long-term trust with a family, being able to think from their perspective when they have doubts, and analysing the best future direction for their child—these are all part of my role as an educational consultant. It carries the hopes of a family and the responsibility of an education professional, and I am doing all I know and can to help.
In 2016, I embarked on the journey of being an educational consultant, and now I'm stepping into my fifth year. Graduating from a local university, I was quite the odd one out in the consulting field, where everyone seemed to have studied abroad. At that time, my only connection to "studying abroad" was probably the half-year experience of being an exchange student in France during my university days.
Over the course of five years, I've worked at two different educational centers. My previous employer was an established institution that taught me that "compliance" is a fundamental trait of a consultant. Whatever students and parents wanted, we provided. If they wanted prestigious schools, we provided prestigious schools. But I always felt it shouldn't be that way.
Later, I joined LINKEDU, where I could be true to myself and truly understand what the term "consultant" means—having no hesitation and maintaining a clear conscience.
The idea of having "no hesitation" means that for me, paths are carved by people and anything is possible. I still remember one of my cases: a student, a pure humanities student, was originally studying communications in Hong Kong. Considering her future prospects, she wanted to switch to health sciences after graduation. She consulted multiple consultants, and they all said it was impossible. How could someone from the humanities switch to the sciences? Following my advice, she self-studied biology and completed relevant internships. Eventually, she successfully entered a master's programme in occupational therapy. Whether something is "possible" or "impossible" often comes down to how determined you are and how willing you are to try without hesitation. And for me, I will also stand by you without hesitation, whether the path is straight or winding, easy or challenging.
The concept of "maintaining a clear conscience" means that, for me, each student is a unique individual. Every young person faces confusion, and each student might have countless questions. But that's alright; we'll take it step by step. Fully understanding each student's personality, then guiding, explaining, and offering tailored advice and evaluations. Patiently leading and tirelessly educating, allowing every student to leap forward and soar gently in the sky of growth. And for each of your journeys, I will absolutely maintain a clear conscience.
If I had to apply some labels to myself, rather than "compliance," I feel that "rationality," "goal-oriented," and "strong execution" would represent me better. With me, you might hear me correcting your misconceptions and offering unique advice. This is probably a craftsman's mindset!
Throughout my 12-year experience as an educational consultant, studying in Australia has become a precious journey in my life. After completing Form 3, I went to Australia to embark on my study journey and enrolled in a boarding school. The classrooms and teaching methods there were vastly different from those in Hong Kong, placing a greater emphasis on inspiring students to actively seek answers. This style of learning not only helped me grasp textbook knowledge but also cultivated my communication and interpersonal skills. After graduation, I made the resolute decision to stay and work in Australia. During my time there, I made friends from all over the world and deeply experienced the essence of different cultures. This study abroad experience has made me a more open and inclusive person.
Reflecting on my educational journey, I attended prestigious schools on Hong Kong Island as well as Band 3 schools. I experienced different environments in both local and foreign co-ed and all-girls schools. These diverse learning experiences allowed me to deeply understand the unique academic atmosphere each school brings. As an educational consultant, these experiences enable me to empathise with students' perspectives and gain a deeper understanding of different schools' teaching styles, academic levels, and student cultures.
When I look back on the time when I chose to study abroad and visited the study centres, the information was quite limited. The agencies at that time only provided choices A and B, so I chose one of them. During the university selection process, I was determined to find the most suitable university for myself rather than limiting myself to choices A and B. I actively participated in open days at all universities in Melbourne and attended numerous subject lectures. These experiences made me truly understand how important it is to choose a university and subject that suits me and that I am passionate about. It also taught me the knack for choosing universities. During my study abroad and work experience abroad, I not only learned textbook knowledge but also developed the ability to handle interpersonal relationships and solve life problems independently. Overcoming challenges each time strengthened my belief in myself. In the eyes of others, I always wear a smile and face challenges optimistically. I believe that cultivating these values is crucial for my future success and happiness. Due to these experiences, I often think from the students' perspective, feeling and understanding the challenges and needs they may face in different school environments. This enables me to provide each student with more caring and accurate advice and guidance for their academic journey. Whether a student aims for a prestigious school or seeks an appropriate learning environment to consolidate their foundation, I tailor the most suitable academic plan according to their personality, interests, and goals. I firmly believe that each student is unique and needs personalized academic advice.
"There are no 'what ifs' in this world. This phrase has always motivated me and serves as my belief in the field of educational consulting. I use it to remind myself and my students that every decision is important and that we cannot go back and change what has already happened. My study abroad experience has taught me that every choice will have a significant impact on the future. Therefore, when choosing schools and subjects, I encourage students to think carefully, clarify their goals, and avoid making hasty decisions. I hope to help them understand how crucial it is to choose the right school and subject for themselves. This lays a solid foundation for their future development and makes every step of their study abroad journey valuable and unforgettable.
