LINKEDU暑期課程

Although there is still some time before the summer vacation, many parents have already been busy planning this year's summer activities for their children since countries have gradually emerged from the shadow of the pandemic. The UK summer study abroad programme, which has been on hiatus for three years, has reentered the parents' field of vision. Vincent Tang, the Business Development Manager of Linkedu, a professional overseas education consultant, stated that many parents used to arrange for their children to participate in UK summer courses or study tours, considering them an opportunity for their children to experience life abroad and adapt to further education.

"After the pandemic, the UK has gradually resumed various summer courses, and this year, the enthusiasm and active participation of parents have exceeded our expectations. Earlier, Linkedu held two physical and online seminars on UK summer courses, both of which attracted over 50 groups of parents and students. At the same time, we have also received many inquiries from parents in various ways about course content, indicating their eagerness to let their children 'go out' and experience the world and have a fulfilling summer," he continued.

Considerations Before Registration

However, Vincent has found that many parents have doubts about the operation and curriculum structure of UK summer courses. Therefore, he suggests that parents consider the following aspects before registering their children:

Age of the Child: Since most summer courses provide boarding services for participating students, it is necessary to consider the age of the participant, which also facilitates class placement.

Objectives of the Course: This is crucial. Parents need to understand the motivations and reasons for arranging for their children to participate in summer courses because it will affect the recommended types and content of courses.

Other Special Information: Parents should also consider their requirements for summer courses, such as the duration of the courses, location, fees, and budget.

Vincent further explains that it is worth noting that most UK summer courses on the market are organised by third-party educational institutions. "Some have been collaborating with renowned UK universities or private schools, such as the University of Oxford, the University of Cambridge, and Lancing College, for many years, and they have extensive and longstanding experience in jointly organising summer courses. There are also a few courses directly operated by schools themselves, such as Concord College and Sedbergh School, where the curriculum, itinerary, accommodation, and care are all planned by the schools. There is no inherent superiority between the two. As long as you find a reputable channel, you can register with peace of mind."

Participating in Courses Beyond "Learning English"

Vincent also pointed out that current UK summer courses have evolved from simple "English courses" and now offer different directions. In general, they can be classified into the following categories:

Boarding School Experience: Suitable for students who are planning to study in the UK. The structure of these summer courses is mainly divided into junior levels (8 to 12 years old) and senior levels (13 to 17 years old). The content primarily focuses on English language courses, supplemented by extracurricular activities or designated subjects (such as science, economics, history, etc.). Students will stay in the school's boarding facilities and engage in sports, the arts, and outings during their free time.

University Experience: Suitable for students aged 13 and above who have basic self-care abilities. These types of summer courses are centred around academic subjects, allowing students who are about to enter university to gain a better understanding of relevant disciplines and university life. The subjects are categorised in detail, covering popular fields such as medicine, engineering, business, law, English, international relations, etc.

Specialised or Academic Training: Similar to the University Experience category, these summer courses also focus on a specific subject. However, the overall pace and atmosphere of the courses lean more towards an academic approach. They are suitable for students aged 14 to 17 who have clear university or subject goals.

Sports or Arts Training: In contrast to the aforementioned categories, these courses emphasise sports or art as their selling point. They are suitable for students who have a passion for outdoor activities or design. The curriculum structure mainly revolves around sports or creative training, with English courses as supplementary components.

Industry Experience: Unlike the general subject-based summer courses, these programmes allow students to interact with professionals and gain practical work experience in specific industries. This provides students with a more concrete understanding of their preferred subjects and how industries operate.

Vincent believes that based on these trends, these summer courses will continue to develop in a "specialised" direction while maintaining the core objective of "learning English" to provide an authentic language learning experience. He advises parents to avoid solely considering the reputation of institutions when choosing and registering for courses and instead focus on the practical significance of summer courses, which enable students to broaden their horizons, expand their perspectives, and learn independent living skills.
