[UK Summer Camp: Gain Study Abroad Experience at the Lowest Cost]

With the increasing academic pressure and competition in Asia, many parents are thinking about their children's future and sending them overseas for education, even at a young age, by enrolling them in boarding schools. The trend towards early study abroad is unstoppable. However, without sufficient psychological preparation and communication, studying abroad can become a nightmare for children. Recalling my time at boarding school, some classmates mentioned that they were sent to study in the UK without any psychological preparation, and they all faced serious adaptation issues at the beginning of their study abroad journey. As a new father, I have witnessed the overprotective nature of Hong Kong parents. Many "little masters" and "princesses" are showered with love and care from their parents, the "four elders," or domestic helpers. These children, who have been showered with endless love, are suddenly sent thousands of miles away to the UK to live as boarders, facing everything on their own. The stark contrast is evident, and my classmates initially had a difficult time adjusting and were unhappy. Before sending their children abroad for study, parents can consider letting them participate in summer […]

[Analysis of the British Education System: A-Level or University Foundation: Which is a more solid stepping stone for entry into a UK university?]

In recent years, many parents have been asking whether it is better to choose the traditional high school curriculum (A-Level) or the University Foundation programme. This question has troubled many parents, but each family's situation is different, and each student is an individual. Therefore, I'm sorry to say that there is no fixed answer to this question. We must choose the most suitable option based on the student's abilities and the family's actual situation. So, what exactly are A-Level and Foundation?  First, let me briefly introduce these two types of courses to parents who may have limited knowledge about them. A-Level is the traditional high school curriculum in the UK. It is a two-year programme, and typically, students choose to study 3–4 A-Level subjects. Afterward, based on their interests, they apply to their desired universities and degree programmes through the UK university admissions service, UCAS. Since A-Level is a high school curriculum in the UK, the teaching syllabus does not take into account the situations of international students. It focuses more on understanding and applying academic knowledge. The admission standards of UK universities primarily consider students' A-Level exam […]

[Analysis of the British Education System: Is the IB Programme Suitable Only for Top Achievers?]

Whenever a student tells me that they are studying the IB programme, I can't help but want to give them a big hug and say, "You've worked hard all these years." In the 2018/19 academic year, I came into contact with hundreds of families inquiring about studying in the UK, and a portion of these parents expressed their desire to enrol their children in schools that offer the IB curriculum. These parents believe that the IB system is currently the most internationally recognised curriculum in the world and that it can cultivate students' comprehensive abilities. Of course, this is indeed an advantage of the IB programme. However, not all students are suitable for the IB curriculum, so how should parents consider and choose?Let's first understand what the IB programme is. The full name of the IB programme is the International Baccalaureate, which is widely adopted by international schools around the world, with nearly 5,000 certified IB schools worldwide. At the high school level, the IB Diploma Programme (IBDP) consists of six subject groups and three core components. The six subject groups are: First Language Second Language Individuals and […]

[UK Boarding Schools: Remember this "Quality Certification" when choosing a school—HMC]

Choosing a restaurant with a Michelin star, buying diamonds with GIA certification—these are criteria we consider for quality. Did you know that UK boarding schools have their own "diamond-level" certification? It's called the Headmasters' Conference (HMC). What is HMC? Let's go back over 200 years to Uppingham School, a private school in the UK. The then-headmaster, Edward Thring, proposed a groundbreaking idea in the education field. He wanted to bring together the headmasters of all the good schools in the UK to discuss educational philosophies and share the most effective teaching methods. This idea took hold and gave birth to the first Headmasters' Conference (HMC). The inaugural conference had 13 headmasters from prestigious boarding schools, such as Bromsgrove, Oakham, Repton, Sherborne, Tonbridge, and the host school, Uppingham. Since then, the annual HMC conferences have continued. Today, there are 296 member schools in HMC, where educators can exchange the latest educational perspectives and select the best practices. So why does HMC represent "quality"? Let's analyse it based on several key concerns for Hong Kong parents: Nurturing Excellence In terms of academic achievement, last year, over two-thirds of students studying […]

[UK Media] Is studying Media only about being a paparazzo?!

In ancient times, humans primarily relied on paper to disseminate information. In the 20th century, the rise of print and electronic media took place, and now in the 21st century, online media dominates the world. Regardless of the evolving forms, one constant is that "Media and Communication" have always been an integral part of human society. However, in Hong Kong, there are always some students aspiring to study "Media" who are misunderstood by reality and discouraged with comments like, "Will you be working for TVB after graduation?" "So, you'll become a paparazzo?" "Are you a political activist?" People echo these misconceptions, but how well do you really understand "Media Studies"? Today, I would like to briefly discuss the career prospects in the field of Media Studies. Taking UK universities as an example, Media Studies courses in the UK are divided into four main categories: 1. Journalism (More practice-oriented discipline) Journalism programmes have a more targeted focus. In addition to theoretical knowledge, they emphasise hands-on opportunities such as news writing, reporting, and on-camera experience. They mainly cover three mediums: print journalism, broadcast journalism, and web journalism. Some UK universities […]

[What is the significance of January-entry UK foundation courses?]

I believe that students who are interested in studying in the UK are aware that some UK universities offer foundation courses or international foundation year programmes with both September and January intakes. So, do the courses differ based on the starting time?Delayed start, still able to progress to degree programmes in the following September.Let's take Durham University's foundation course as an example. If you enrol in September, you will study from September until the following June. If you enrol in January, you will study from January until August, and both options will lead to the start of university in September of the following year. However, as you can see from the chart below, the September intake foundation course, which runs from September to June, has a summer break of about two months, providing some time for relaxation and buffering. On the other hand, the January intake starts in January and continues until August, followed immediately by the start of university in September, making the schedule more tight. However, regardless of the September or January intake, most schools have similar course content and admission requirements. Since the differences are […]

[The Russell Group: The Hermes and LV of UK Universities?]

Just as people appreciate designer handbags like Hermes, LV, and Prada, is there a concept of "designer" universities in the UK? Buying a luxury handbag gives you quality and service, and it also gives you a sense of superiority. One such association that comes to mind is the Russell Group, which is often talked about, but how many people actually know how prestigious the Russell Group universities are? There are so many universities in the UK, so which one is more suitable for you? If you haven't decided on a desired institution yet, I will introduce two well-known universities in the UK in the following text for your reference: the University of Sheffield and the University of Nottingham.  But before that, let me first introduce The Russell Group of Universities. When I was studying at the University of Warwick, I didn't even know that Warwick was one of the Russell Group universities. So, what is The Russell Group? It is a consortium of 24 top UK universities. The group aims to enhance research funding and standards, institutional income, the recruitment of excellent staff, and collaboration among universities. In fact, many students are not aware that they are applying to a Russell Group university. The Russell Group universities include the following 24 institutions: University of Birmingham University of Bristol University of Cambridge Cardiff University Durham University University of Edinburgh University of Exeter University of Glasgow Imperial College London King’s College London University of Leeds LSE (London School of Economics & Political Science ) University of Manchester Newcastle […]

[British Social Science: Turns out, society is very "scientific"]

In the eyes of many people, social science has always been associated with terms like "humanities," "rote memorization," or even distorted images like "bluffing" and "superficial knowledge." In fact, besides studying theories, social science can also be approached through qualitative research methods such as questionnaire surveys and participant observations, or through quantitative research methods that involve data collection, integration, analysis, and the presentation of phenomena. These methods provide scientific evidence to support the study of human beings and social development. To trace the origins, the study of how humans develop from individuals to small groups, large communities, and eventually complex modern societies should start with sociology. Then, based on different research areas and topics, it further deepens into specialised disciplines. From individuals to society, an interdisciplinary study of social sustainability Like most social science subjects, sociology emphasises a systematic analysis of various issues in society, starting with small-scale analyses and gradually expanding to macro-level studies of social structures. This discipline places great importance on "humans" as the creators of "society." It begins with micro-level studies of their behaviours and values and then extends to multi-level macro-level studies of […]

【UK G5 Universities】: Complete Guide to Applying to G5 Universities and Colleges

1. UK G5 Universities In the mouths of students and parents, the term "UK G5 Universities" is often circulated, referring to the top five most powerful universities in the UK. They are University of Oxford, University of Cambridge, Imperial College London, University College London (UCL), and LSE (London School of Economics and Political Science). These five shining academic stars have indeed attracted many ambitious students. Of course, the admission standards for UK G5 Universities are very high, with Oxford and Cambridge even having their own set of "game rules," yet they are still highly sought after by many top students. University of Oxford University of Cambridge Imperial College London University College London (UCL) LSE 2. Professional qualification subjects Apart from the G5 universities in the UK, Thai students are also enthusiastic about some professional qualification subjects. Subjects such as medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, law, accounting, architecture, and physiotherapy have seen an increasing number of applicants. Some of these subjects have limited available places, which adds to the difficulty of the application process. In order to secure a place, applicants go to great lengths, spending a significant amount of […]

[Politics in the UK] Politics and International Relations: Interest-Based Politics and International Relations Studies

Where there are people, there will be politics. In a society of individuals, politics can be understood as the effective use of systems, laws, and management methods to achieve long-term stability and harmony. Over the course of history, politics has evolved from governing territories and managing people to becoming a means of safeguarding economic and personal interests. Since the signing of the Treaty of Westphalia in 1648, the concept of sovereign states has emerged, giving rise to the field of International Relations under the umbrella of politics. Although both subjects fall within the social sciences, these two disciplines were relatively less popular among students in Hong Kong. However, with a series of political and social events occurring in Hong Kong and globally, there has been a surge of interest in studying the social sciences. While sociology has been previously mentioned, politics and international relations have also gained prominence, riding the wave of this trend. Politics and International Relations: How do they differ? Interestingly, many students may not be able to differentiate between "politics" and "international relations" or may use the term "politics" broadly to refer to both subjects. […]

[UK Marketing]: "The Digital Revolution of 'Moments Drama'

The pandemic has driven electronic consumption, and marketing is rapidly transitioning to digital. The COVID-19 pandemic has undoubtedly changed human consumption patterns. From traditional in-person visits to physical markets, we can now shop online using electronic currency without leaving our homes. This has led to the rise of electronic shopping platforms. As consumer behaviour accelerates towards digitization and high mobility, marketing strategies and methods are inevitably shifting towards digitization. Traditional print advertisements are transforming into utilising social media, the internet, and other platforms to attract customers through videos, short messages, real-time live streaming, and other means in order to capture the attention and interest of netizens. As most consumers have shifted to electronic or online consumption, their consumption habits, purchasing power, payment methods, and preferences for goods and services leave traces in the digital world. This allows businesses to have more convenient ways to adjust their sales techniques by analysing and integrating consumer behaviour and consumption patterns. They can use comprehensive data and results to cater to and attract specific target customers. Marketing courses at universities: Rapid transformation in line with digitization In response to the shift towards […]

[UK Art and Design: Study Digital Design in London]

Art and design subjects have been evolving towards "technologization" and "three-dimensionality." Technologization refers to the use of design tools that have gradually shifted from brushes and canvases to extensive computer applications and professional design software. The skills required for graphic design have also transformed from the traditional process of drafting compositions on paper to instant creation on computer screens with the help of technology. This change has led many universities to keep up with the trend by offering Digital Design courses along with a range of related programmes such as Digital Media Design and Games Design. It's not as simple as just using computers. Sometimes the Digital Design course is referred to as a "computerised graphic design course" because, in the first year of the programme, students are taught graphic design techniques and skills using computers and design software. This can create the misconception that Digital Design is solely about using technology. However, the "three-dimensionality" of Digital Design lies in the fact that the curriculum not only teaches how to combine technology with graphic design but also extends the teaching content to the realm of technology. This includes […]

[UK Boarding School Rankings: Tips to Avoid School Ranking Traps]

Choosing an ideal UK boarding school for your children is undoubtedly a big challenge for parents. In casual conversations with other parents, you may have heard many of them say, "I want to find a boarding school in the UK that ranks in the top 50." or "How can I find schools ranked higher than 400 in the UK boarding school rankings?" However, with the various UK boarding school rankings available, it can be confusing to determine which one truly has reference value. 1. What are the UK boarding school rankings? There is no official UK government-generated ranking of boarding schools in the UK. The rankings mentioned by parents are generally the ones published by newspapers or authoritative organisations, such as The Telegraph and The Times. These rankings often use GCSE and A Level results published in August each year as the criteria. Since each organisation has its own statistical methods and limitations, the results of each ranking are not the same. Among the rankings that predominantly use academic performance as the criteria, I have chosen two commonly referenced UK boarding school ranking tables to analyse: #1 The […]

[UK University Foundation Programmes: Is Education Becoming Commercialised? Discussing the New "Product" of the UK Study Foundation]

Looking back on my days of studying in the UK, getting into university used to rely solely on the results of the A-Level public exams. However, with the growing trend of studying abroad, the British saw the potential in this international market. In the past decade, another "product" has emerged in the UK study circle: UK University Foundation Programmes. Commercialization of Foundation Programs = Irregularity? Some people may worry that Foundations are tools for educational institutions to generate profits, and they consider them less formal than A-Level courses, which may not guarantee university admission. But to be honest, whether it's universities, secondary schools, or Foundations, education is inherently a business. I believe that the commercialization of Foundation Programs is actually beneficial for students because schools will never intentionally make it difficult for students to progress or prevent them from advancing. Schools want every student to succeed and progress to Year 1, because only when students successfully enter Year 1 can universities continue to collect tuition fees from them for the remaining years and maximise their own interests. However, with so many "products" in the Foundation market, how should […]

[#LINKEDUpeople: Student Interview #001 Isaac Ho, University of Bristol]

"By being goal-oriented and seizing the opportunity to pursue what interests you, enjoy life to the fullest."Isaac, who started studying at the University of Bristol last September, is currently enrolled in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) foundation programme, with a focus on mechanical engineering. "Studying the foundation programme in university allows me to concentrate on my desired subjects earlier than my peers, and I see it as an advantage."  Isaac had already developed an interest in engineering during middle school and was determined to pursue a career in this field. In order to adapt to university life a year earlier and focus on his major subjects, he decided to skip the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (DSE) and directly enrol in the University of Bristol's renowned engineering bridging programme. "Online classes don't feel too unfamiliar, and I even feel the teachers' extra care in one-on-one interactions." Due to the pandemic, Isaac mentioned that most classes were conducted online. The professors also arranged online group discussions and provided opportunities for walk-in sessions, aiming to provide a classroom-like experience. Even though it was online teaching, the teachers put […]

[UK Foundation Programmes: Changing Perceptions: Do British Students Study Foundation Programmes Too?]

Foundation programmes have been commonly associated with international students in the public's perception. However, in reality, there are also local British students who pursue Foundation programmes as a pathway to UK universities. Surprisingly, these local students make up over 60% of the total enrollment in Foundation programmes, completely overturning the traditional impression that only international students attend these courses! In terms of International Year One programmes, Swansea University offers a wide range of subjects, including its strong disciplines such as engineering, computer science, business, psychology, sports science, and media studies. Compared to other UK universities offering similar programmes, Swansea covers a broader range of subjects. The key difference lies in the fact that most of these subjects are taught alongside direct Year 1 entry students. Additionally, two extra sessions of academic support and Interactive Learning Skills and Communication are included each week to help international students enhance their English language proficiency and academic skills, facilitating their adaptation to university life. [UK Education System] UK Foundation

The compulsory subjects in the UK Foundation programme are English Preparation and University Learning Skills. It's worth mentioning that University Learning Skills teaches students academic writing, referencing, speed reading techniques for reference materials, the effective use of word processing software for coursework, and presentation skills. These skills are specifically designed to prepare students for university-level studies and equip them with the necessary tools to transition from secondary school to university. In the UK Foundation programme, elective subjects are chosen based on the student's desired degree progression. Students select 2-3 modules that are relevant to their chosen degree, laying a solid foundation for their university courses. When embarking on their first academic journey in the UK, students face a new learning environment and mode of study, requiring them to adapt to various changes. By effectively utilising the Foundation year as a period of university adaptation, students can significantly enhance their learning outcomes, gain confidence in enjoying campus life, and strive for excellent academic performance upon graduation.

"Choosing Boarding Schools in the UK: 7 Key Points"

Choosing a boarding school in the UK - Avoidance 1: Only relying on rankings and public exam results. Who says that the higher the ranking of a boarding school in the UK, the better the school? This is the most common misconception among Thai parents, but it is also the most forgivable mistake. We understand that parents want to choose a boarding school in the UK with excellent academic performance for their children, but blindly relying on the rankings often hinders the effectiveness of their child's development plan. After all, the education in boarding schools in the UK focuses not on imparting knowledge to students, but rather on guiding their own talents and promoting holistic development beyond academics. Relying solely on academic grades for rankings is definitely not a balanced measurement indicator. What is even more astonishing is that some boarding schools in the UK adopt a selective approach, meaning that if a student's GCSE grades are not satisfactory, they may be asked to leave. This practice indirectly boosts their average scores in the rankings. Therefore, when parents look at rankings, they should also carefully understand the reasons behind […]

How was the media mogul created?

In today's technologically advanced society, everyone has smartphones and can become a director, but can everyone really become a director? And can everyone who expresses their opinions online be considered a keyboard warrior or a media professional? After graduating, Andres pursued his directorial dreams by taking a Media Foundation Course. Recently, Andres shared his experience during the Foundation Course. Is the media just about learning filmmaking? Andres found the first semester more interesting, primarily focusing on introductions and teaching video production. In the second semester, they moved away from the studio and delved into books and texts, studying film and journalism. The coursework required a lot of writing and analysis, creating more pressure compared to the first semester. However, these skills are essential for a media professional. Theory and practise Although the theory courses were more challenging, the school provided several exciting opportunities for students to put theory into practice. For example, in the first semester, there was an opportunity to collaborate with students from a music school to shoot a music video. In the second semester, there was a chance to work with an environmental organisation in […]
