[Computer Science in the UK]: Are Robots Truly "Intelligent" and "Smart"?

Computers are definitely not a novelty in today's digital society, especially with the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has increased the use of computers and the internet for everyday work, consumption, and entertainment. With the continuous development of technology, universities in the UK, as pioneers in popularising computer technology and knowledge, have incorporated various emerging fields into their traditional computer science curricula. In addition to common areas such as computer game programming, artificial intelligence, and network security, there is a growing topic that has sparked discussions: Robotics. A TV drama series featuring intelligent robots recently ignited a wave of discussions on robots, computer science, and artificial intelligence. Nowadays, intelligent machines are used in various daily operations, such as large shopping malls, hotel cleaning, room service, as well as high-risk tasks like bomb disposal and minimally invasive surgery. However, robots have been around since the 16th century, evolving from steam-powered "machines" to those powered by electricity and even artificial intelligence. Today's robots rely heavily on computer programming. This trend has not only led many UK universities to establish a new discipline called Robotic Engineering but has also influenced […]

[Applying to G5 Universities] - How to Take the Lead in G5 University Applications with a Personal Statement

In the UK university UCAS application process, the Personal Statement is an indispensable component. The UCAS application system for UK universities adopts the practice of pre-conditional offers. Even though there is a Clearing stage after the results are released, high-ranking universities like those in the Russell Group and popular subjects in renowned G5 universities are likely to reach full capacity early. In situations where admissions officers don't meet applicants in person, and decisions are based solely on academic achievements, the Personal Statement acts as a student's business card, playing a crucial role in shaping the first impression. Therefore, this document directly impacts whether a student can secure an offer from their preferred university in the UCAS application. Passing Through Three Stages — Considerations for the Personal Statement in G5 University Applications Understanding the Purpose of the Personal Statement When crafting a Personal Statement, students need to trace its "origin" — why do UK universities require students to submit an additional statement alongside their grades? The intention behind this is to allocate conditional offers to applicants genuinely suitable for the course. Therefore, when applying to a UK university, students […]

[UK University Foundation Programmes: Is Education Becoming Commercialised? Discussing the New "Product" of the UK Study Foundation]

Looking back on my days of studying in the UK, getting into university used to rely solely on the results of the A-Level public exams. However, with the growing trend of studying abroad, the British saw the potential in this international market. In the past decade, another "product" has emerged in the UK study circle: UK University Foundation Programmes. Commercialization of Foundation Programs = Irregularity? Some people may worry that Foundations are tools for educational institutions to generate profits, and they consider them less formal than A-Level courses, which may not guarantee university admission. But to be honest, whether it's universities, secondary schools, or Foundations, education is inherently a business. I believe that the commercialization of Foundation Programs is actually beneficial for students because schools will never intentionally make it difficult for students to progress or prevent them from advancing. Schools want every student to succeed and progress to Year 1, because only when students successfully enter Year 1 can universities continue to collect tuition fees from them for the remaining years and maximise their own interests. However, with so many "products" in the Foundation market, how should […]

[#LINKEDUpeople: Student Interview #001 Isaac Ho, University of Bristol]

"By being goal-oriented and seizing the opportunity to pursue what interests you, enjoy life to the fullest."Isaac, who started studying at the University of Bristol last September, is currently enrolled in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) foundation programme, with a focus on mechanical engineering. "Studying the foundation programme in university allows me to concentrate on my desired subjects earlier than my peers, and I see it as an advantage."  Isaac had already developed an interest in engineering during middle school and was determined to pursue a career in this field. In order to adapt to university life a year earlier and focus on his major subjects, he decided to skip the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (DSE) and directly enrol in the University of Bristol's renowned engineering bridging programme. "Online classes don't feel too unfamiliar, and I even feel the teachers' extra care in one-on-one interactions." Due to the pandemic, Isaac mentioned that most classes were conducted online. The professors also arranged online group discussions and provided opportunities for walk-in sessions, aiming to provide a classroom-like experience. Even though it was online teaching, the teachers put […]

[Analysis of the British Education System: Is the IB Programme Suitable Only for Top Achievers?]

Whenever a student tells me that they are studying the IB programme, I can't help but want to give them a big hug and say, "You've worked hard all these years." In the 2018/19 academic year, I came into contact with hundreds of families inquiring about studying in the UK, and a portion of these parents expressed their desire to enrol their children in schools that offer the IB curriculum. These parents believe that the IB system is currently the most internationally recognised curriculum in the world and that it can cultivate students' comprehensive abilities. Of course, this is indeed an advantage of the IB programme. However, not all students are suitable for the IB curriculum, so how should parents consider and choose?Let's first understand what the IB programme is. The full name of the IB programme is the International Baccalaureate, which is widely adopted by international schools around the world, with nearly 5,000 certified IB schools worldwide. At the high school level, the IB Diploma Programme (IBDP) consists of six subject groups and three core components. The six subject groups are: First Language Second Language Individuals and […]

[Analysis of the British Education System: A-Level or University Foundation: Which is a more solid stepping stone for entry into a UK university?]

In recent years, many parents have been asking whether it is better to choose the traditional high school curriculum (A-Level) or the University Foundation programme. This question has troubled many parents, but each family's situation is different, and each student is an individual. Therefore, I'm sorry to say that there is no fixed answer to this question. We must choose the most suitable option based on the student's abilities and the family's actual situation. So, what exactly are A-Level and Foundation?  First, let me briefly introduce these two types of courses to parents who may have limited knowledge about them. A-Level is the traditional high school curriculum in the UK. It is a two-year programme, and typically, students choose to study 3–4 A-Level subjects. Afterward, based on their interests, they apply to their desired universities and degree programmes through the UK university admissions service, UCAS. Since A-Level is a high school curriculum in the UK, the teaching syllabus does not take into account the situations of international students. It focuses more on understanding and applying academic knowledge. The admission standards of UK universities primarily consider students' A-Level exam […]

[UK Summer Camp: Gain Study Abroad Experience at the Lowest Cost]

With the increasing academic pressure and competition in Asia, many parents are thinking about their children's future and sending them overseas for education, even at a young age, by enrolling them in boarding schools. The trend towards early study abroad is unstoppable. However, without sufficient psychological preparation and communication, studying abroad can become a nightmare for children. Recalling my time at boarding school, some classmates mentioned that they were sent to study in the UK without any psychological preparation, and they all faced serious adaptation issues at the beginning of their study abroad journey. As a new father, I have witnessed the overprotective nature of Hong Kong parents. Many "little masters" and "princesses" are showered with love and care from their parents, the "four elders," or domestic helpers. These children, who have been showered with endless love, are suddenly sent thousands of miles away to the UK to live as boarders, facing everything on their own. The stark contrast is evident, and my classmates initially had a difficult time adjusting and were unhappy. Before sending their children abroad for study, parents can consider letting them participate in summer […]

[Art and Design in the UK: Explore Studying Art and Design in London]

Looking at the recent UCAS applications for universities in the UK, it is evident that many international students still have a strong interest in Art and Design subjects. While Art and Design may not have the same professional certifications as fields like Accounting or Physiotherapy, they have evolved beyond traditional paper-and-pencil drawing and now encompass emerging areas such as animation and esports, opening up new design opportunities. Traditional vs. Emerging: Increasingly Promising Job Prospects in Art and Design Even within the field of Art and Design, there is a distinction between traditional and emerging disciplines. The term "traditional" refers to subjects that have historically attracted more student applications and inquiries. Most universities offering Art and Design programmes include these common subjects: Fashion Design 時裝設計 Graphic Design 圖像設計 (一般是指2D平面設計) Illustration 插畫繪圖 Interior Design 室內設計 With the widespread use of computer technology and design software, these traditional subjects have incorporated digital design elements to keep up with the evolving demands of technology. This transformation aligns well with emerging industries such as animation, digital media, electronic gaming, and the like, creating new courses: 3D Games Design 立體影像及遊戲圖像設計 Animation 動畫設計 Product Design […]

[Analysis of the UK University Education System: Foundation Transfer Strategy Requires Early Preparation]

It's summer vacation again, and most UK courses are coming to an end, with students receiving their final grades. Recently, I have been receiving requests for help from students who have completed their university foundation courses. I have categorised these students into two types. The first type is those who have already planned to transfer to another university because they realise that the current university they are progressing to is not suitable for them and they want to transfer to a more preferred one. The second type of students are those who find out that they did not meet the academic requirements to progress due to their grades and are faced with the options of either changing their major or receiving a rejection letter stating, "Unfortunately, we are unable to offer you a place. I am sorry about that." Be Prepared with your UCAS Application The first type of student is more proactive, as they have already made up their minds to transfer and have applied through UCAS, the UK university admission system, after receiving their grades for the first term. They have received conditional offers from other […]

[Choosing Subjects at UK Universities: Choosing Subjects is Like Choosing a Life Partner] Balancing preferences and reality

Some people believe that "your academic subject determines your destiny" in university. However, only a small portion of people work in fields related to their academic subjects. Many people regret their choice of subjects after starting their careers, and some even consider changing fields after completing their master's degrees. So how should we choose our subjects from the beginning? It is a profound question. Is studying just for finding a job? Having worked in the overseas education industry for many years, I have noticed that many students and parents hold a deep-rooted belief that studying a professional subject leads to becoming a professional in the future. I often see students influenced by "the most promising industries" or "the top ten popular careers" choose a specific subject when studying abroad in order to secure a good job in the future. However, the definition of "popular careers" is constantly changing. Popular industries and jobs often change along with societal trends. For example, a few years ago, due to increased emphasis on health issues among urban dwellers, there was a surge in demand for physical therapists. But during the 3–4 years […]

[Durham University: Is it good? My experience studying at Durham for 3 years]

Phoebe, my student from a few years ago, is currently a third-year student at Durham University, studying BA (Hons) Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE). When people find out that Phoebe is studying at Durham University, they often ask her where exactly Durham is. Her response is, "Durham is a small town in the northeast of England, near Newcastle." Of course, unless you're a fan of the English Premier League, you probably haven't heard of Newcastle either. This year is Phoebe's final year at Durham, and she wanted to document her experiences at the university. During her summer break in Hong Kong, we had a meal together, and she shared her insights about Durham, including the city itself, the unique collegiate system, academic performance, extracurricular activities, and support for international students. I have recorded these details, hoping that both prospective and current students can have a better understanding of Durham University. 延伸閱讀 : Durham University Complete guide to studying in the UK 2022 Look at the UK map to choose a university A picturesque, historic city How small is Durham? [UK Study Tour: Sending children abroad for summer camps is actually a lesson in "growth" for parents]

I used to know a mother from my previous company whose son, Jason, had just turned 12. She arranged a summer camp at a boarding school in the UK for Jason during the summer break. Knowing that I had studied in the UK before, she called me before his departure to inquire about some information. She told me that she bought a new mobile phone and an international SIM card for him to facilitate communication. Since he had never packed his own clothes, she divided the clothes for each day into numbered bags (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7), each containing clothes, pants, underwear, socks, etc. She also prepared some small gifts for the teachers and classmates, and so on. When she told me about her preparations, my immediate reaction was, "If you have prepared everything for him, what's the meaning?" Later, she brought Jason to me for some "counselling" before his departure, hoping that I could help ease his nervousness. I asked Jason, "Are you afraid of going to the UK alone?" Jason replied, "I'm not afraid, but I'm afraid she will be afraid." He glanced […]

[UK Boarding Schools: Exploring the Land, Sea, and Sky—Unleashing the True Spirit of British Boarding Schools]

In addition to academic subjects, students in UK boarding schools participate in a wide range of extracurricular activities almost every day. The purpose of these activities is to cultivate students' interests and equip them with essential life skills such as critical thinking, independence, and leadership. These skills are meant to be explored, experienced, and practised in the world beyond textbooks, and schools encourage students to find a balance between studying and relaxation. So, when the final bell rings and classes are over, can students rush to the big grass field to play basketball or football with their peers? No, coming all the way to the UK for education, it would be limited to just a "mundane" ball? UK boarding schools offer activities that go beyond what Hong Kong schools typically provide, spanning the realms of "land," "sea," and "sky." Let's start with the "sea"! Rossall School is recognised as one of the schools that offers a traditional British education. Situated on the picturesque coast of Lancashire, the school takes advantage of its geographic location to excel in diving activities. Rossall School has established a Scuba Dive Club for […]

How was the media mogul created?

In today's technologically advanced society, everyone has smartphones and can become a director, but can everyone really become a director? And can everyone who expresses their opinions online be considered a keyboard warrior or a media professional? After graduating, Andres pursued his directorial dreams by taking a Media Foundation Course. Recently, Andres shared his experience during the Foundation Course. Is the media just about learning filmmaking? Andres found the first semester more interesting, primarily focusing on introductions and teaching video production. In the second semester, they moved away from the studio and delved into books and texts, studying film and journalism. The coursework required a lot of writing and analysis, creating more pressure compared to the first semester. However, these skills are essential for a media professional. Theory and practise Although the theory courses were more challenging, the school provided several exciting opportunities for students to put theory into practice. For example, in the first semester, there was an opportunity to collaborate with students from a music school to shoot a music video. In the second semester, there was a chance to work with an environmental organisation in […]

"Choosing Boarding Schools in the UK: 7 Key Points"

Choosing a boarding school in the UK - Avoidance 1: Only relying on rankings and public exam results. Who says that the higher the ranking of a boarding school in the UK, the better the school? This is the most common misconception among Thai parents, but it is also the most forgivable mistake. We understand that parents want to choose a boarding school in the UK with excellent academic performance for their children, but blindly relying on the rankings often hinders the effectiveness of their child's development plan. After all, the education in boarding schools in the UK focuses not on imparting knowledge to students, but rather on guiding their own talents and promoting holistic development beyond academics. Relying solely on academic grades for rankings is definitely not a balanced measurement indicator. What is even more astonishing is that some boarding schools in the UK adopt a selective approach, meaning that if a student's GCSE grades are not satisfactory, they may be asked to leave. This practice indirectly boosts their average scores in the rankings. Therefore, when parents look at rankings, they should also carefully understand the reasons behind […]

[UK Education System] UK Foundation

The compulsory subjects in the UK Foundation programme are English Preparation and University Learning Skills. It's worth mentioning that University Learning Skills teaches students academic writing, referencing, speed reading techniques for reference materials, the effective use of word processing software for coursework, and presentation skills. These skills are specifically designed to prepare students for university-level studies and equip them with the necessary tools to transition from secondary school to university. In the UK Foundation programme, elective subjects are chosen based on the student's desired degree progression. Students select 2-3 modules that are relevant to their chosen degree, laying a solid foundation for their university courses. When embarking on their first academic journey in the UK, students face a new learning environment and mode of study, requiring them to adapt to various changes. By effectively utilising the Foundation year as a period of university adaptation, students can significantly enhance their learning outcomes, gain confidence in enjoying campus life, and strive for excellent academic performance upon graduation.

[UK Foundation Programmes: Changing Perceptions: Do British Students Study Foundation Programmes Too?]

Foundation programmes have been commonly associated with international students in the public's perception. However, in reality, there are also local British students who pursue Foundation programmes as a pathway to UK universities. Surprisingly, these local students make up over 60% of the total enrollment in Foundation programmes, completely overturning the traditional impression that only international students attend these courses! In terms of International Year One programmes, Swansea University offers a wide range of subjects, including its strong disciplines such as engineering, computer science, business, psychology, sports science, and media studies. Compared to other UK universities offering similar programmes, Swansea covers a broader range of subjects. The key difference lies in the fact that most of these subjects are taught alongside direct Year 1 entry students. Additionally, two extra sessions of academic support and Interactive Learning Skills and Communication are included each week to help international students enhance their English language proficiency and academic skills, facilitating their adaptation to university life.
